Best Local Land Use Practices
From Ohio.gov: In addition to supporting local decisions about the location of growth, the state will also supply guidance on best local land use practices for minimizing development impacts on water quality wherever the expansion of developed areas occurs, and for reducing impacts to water quality in redevelopment situations. This includes a set of model zoning ordinances and resolutions recommended for voluntary adoption by local communities, a set of guidance documents for a range of additional best practices, and training opportunities for local government elected officials and staff. Model ordinances are provided for storm water and aquatic area protection and meadow protection. Guidance documents have been prepared for Conservation Development, Compact Development, Source Water Protection, Agricultural Lands Protection, Tree and Woodland Protection, Scenic Protection, Historic Preservation, Steep Slopes Protection, Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), Brownfields Redevelopment, and Access Management. The training program, previously focused on the Lake Erie watershed, will be expanded statewide and is not limited to communities with Watershed Planning Partnerships.

ConserveMyLand.org
This online Conservation Planning Tool is designed to provide web-based conservation assistance to help landowners on the urban fringe understand the importance of their land in preserving their local rural heritage, local water quality and water supplies, and wildlife habitat.
A cooperative effort being piloted in central Tennessee, this planning tool provides case studies of local landowners who are implementing land conservation practices and best management practices. It highlights farmland preservation strategies, provides online tutorials, fact sheets and an email link for requesting technical assistance.
The feed-back e-mail system monitored by the Southeast Watershed Forum staff will direct requests for assistance to the appropriate program partner; the Land Trust for Tennessee, Harpeth River Watershed Association, Williamson County Soil and Water Conservation District, NRCS staff, or the Extension office.
It is hoped that this user-friendly web-based tool will encourage farmland preservation on the urban fringe and encourage installation of best management practices to maintain and improve local water quality and quality of life. It is hoped that this pilot will be expanded regionally to serve other counties facing similar threats to their rural heritage.

Delta Farmers Advocating Resource Management
Delta Farmers Advocating Resource Management (Delta F.A.R.M.) began in 1998 through the combined efforts of producers, sponsors, and partner agencies, to assist farmers and landowners in the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Northwest Mississippi Delta region. The program aims to conserve water and reduce nonpoint source pollution from agriculture and to conserve, restore, and enhance the environment of the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta. Delta F.A.R.M. provides its members with technical information on conservation practices and promotes the members’ current conservation efforts.

EPA 319 Nonpoint Source Success Story
Batie Creek was listed on Virginia's 303(d) list of impaired waters in 1998. The creek was listed because of low dissolved oxygen levels, caused by inflows of anoxic leachate due to a lumber company's improper disposal of sawdust. The low dissolved oxygen levels negatively affected a population of endangered cave isopods (a type of crustacean) in Batie Creek's headwaters. With help from an array of partners, led by the section 319-funded Karst Program of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage, the company removed and reused most of the decomposing sawdust. Dissolved oxygen levels have rebounded, prompting the removal of Batie Creek from the impaired waters list in 2006. Click here to read the entire story.

EPA Issues Guidance to Control Urban Runoff Pollution
EPA has released National Management Measures to Control Non-point Source Pollution from Urban Areas. The comprehensive 512-page guidance will help local governments and others protect water resources from polluted runoff that can result from everyday activities and urban development. The guidance will also help municipalities and other regulated entities implement Phase I and Phase II Stormwater Permit Programs. This publication includes voluntary guidance on 12 management measures designed to prevent and control runoff pollutants from urban and suburban lands. The management measures cover topics such as watershed assessment and protection; runoff from new and existing development, road networks, and construction sites; septic system impacts; pollution prevention; and inspection and maintenance of urban runoff management practices. The guidance is free and available online at http://www.epa.gov/owow/nps/urbanmm/.

Rain Gardens Blossom as a Storm-water Management Tool
When it rains, it pours—and that’s the problem for scientists and engineers working in the field of storm-water management. But a study posted today on ES&T’s Research ASAP website (10.1021/es051644f) confirms the effectiveness of rain gardens, an increasingly popular—and aesthetically pleasing—technique for reducing the flow of common pollutants after storms in cities and suburbs. Authors Michael Dietz and John Clausen of the University of Connecticut also show how a simple design modification can enhance rain gardens’ ability to treat the polluted rainwater flowing off roofs. The authors hope that their results will help contribute to the growing acceptance of rain gardens by developers and homeowners.

Source Water Protection in Rural America - Joe Burns
Southeast and Tennessee Watershed Roundtable Presentation, 2004
Protecting rural water supplies either surface water or groundwater is challenging and rewarding when it happens. This presentation will characterize how successful protection measures have been implemented despite the common obstacles to protection. Case studies will demonstrate how local stakeholders through BMP’s, cost share programs, legal disputes and sheer determination have protected two rural communities in Kentucky.
